Rocky Mountain District 2012 Convention & Contest

The New MexiChords went to downtown Albuquerque this year for the annual convention and contest of the Barbershop Harmony Society's Rocky Mountain District. It was a little different for us this year, just driving in from our homes rather than being a group for the weekend.

As I have come to recognize as normal, there was a lot of preparation to be done. One piece was the on-stage walk-on. Each chorus gets a specified time — a specified SHORT time — so its members can at least get to see how to get on the stage, where to move to, and how the hall sounds — all shepherded by a group of excellent volunteer folks.

Of course, the walk-on doesn't look like the performance. That looked more like this.

We sang well, but "out of the money". The problem was, our warm-up was better than our performance. Guess we let our adrenalin get the better of us.

Two of our quartets were in the quartet competition. One was Rio Bravo.

. . . and the other was the Harmonikats.

There was also a quartet of members from our chorus and Los Alamos' Lads of Enchantment.

They sang well as always. (Now if we can just develop a few more quartets like them . . . .)

All in all, a lot of good singing. A lot of enjoyment. Now we've begun working toward next year's contest — in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

If you enjoy barbershop style music, watch for our next show and come hear us sing.
Or come sing with us. It's really fun!

The New MexiChords is an a cappella barbershop chorus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, affiliated with the Barbershop Harmony Society.
